The Department of Medical Genetics and the Laboratories of Neurogenetics at the University of British Columbia invite applications from outstanding scientists for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) – Tier II. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure track. Candidates must have a PhD degree, MD/PhD, or equivalent with postdoctoral research experience, have demonstrated excellence in teaching and demonstrated accomplishments in molecular, statistical or computational genetics with relevance to human neurologic or neurodegenerative disorders.

The individual selected will be subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat. The start date of this position is upon a date to be mutually agreed, but available immediately after approval by CRC. The successful candidate will be expected to be competitive for external grant funding to develop and maintain a dynamic research program that fosters new opportunities for genetic discovery and translational research. As a faculty member in Medical Genetics the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to both undergraduate and graduate teaching and actively participate in departmental activities. They will be a group leader of the Laboratories of Neurogenetics, a collaborative group of dedicated, experienced and highly motivated clinicians, molecular geneticists, bioinformaticians, neurogeneticists and neuroscientists with closely affiliated research programs, currently directed by Canada Excellence Research Chair, Dr. Matt Farrer (www.can.ubc.ca). Research is performed in partnership with the Brain Research Centre and the newly created Centre for Brain Health, UBC and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics, UBC and BC Children and Women’s Hospital, and Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine, UBC and VCH.

The BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Department of Medical Genetics invite applications for a full-time Clinical Geneticist locum position within the Provincial Medical Genetics Program for a period of one year.

The Provincial Medical Genetics Program provides comprehensive genetic services to the province of British Columbia and has a long tradition of excellence in clinical care, education and research. This position entails clinical service delivery for families seen with prenatal and general genetic concerns. In addition to regular scheduled clinics, the Clinical Geneticist locum will also be expected to perform on-call services and outreach clinics.

Candidates for this position will have an M.D. or equivalent degree, must be eligible for permanent licensing in the province of British Columbia, as well as having specialist certification in medical genetics with either the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Candidates will also be considered if they possess comparable training and certification from other countries. Salary will be determined by qualifications and clinical experience according to the Provincial Medical Services Plan.

Overview: The Centre for Applied Neurogenetics in the Brain Research Centre and part of the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in neurogenetics

POSITION SUMMARY

Dr. Farrer, Director for the Centre for Applied Neurogenetics at the University of British Columbia seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to study the genetic factors and neurobiology of disease. The position is for one year with possibility of extension.

The successful applicant will be joining a dedicated, experienced and highly motivated team of neurogeneticists and neurobiologists. The work and environment is fast-paced and exciting, at the cutting edge of molecular insights into this devastating disease. Work is focused on the identification and validation of novel genetic factors involved in neurodegeneration through familial studies as well as large series of cases and control from all over the globe. This work is then translated to therapeutic development, presently focused on α-synuclein and leucine-rich repeat kinase 2, and other genes/proteins implicated in Parkinson’s disease.

The successful candidate will contribute primarily to one research project but will be involved in others. They will work very closely with the team responsible for identification and validation of genetic factors leading to the development of neurologic and neurodegenerative disorders. Research will be performed in partnership with other academic groups, research institutions and the Pharmaceutical industry.

Applicants will be expected to think creatively in the design and execution of the research projects, therefore maximizing the resources for the successful discovery of novel genetic causes of disease.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. specializing in human molecular genetics, statistical genetics and bioinformatics. He/she will have demonstrated research acumen, and have a track record of successful publications in neurologic and/or neurodegenerative disease. In addition the candidate must have:

  • Broad knowledge of human molecular genetics, neurology and neuroscience
  • Excellent scientific publication record.
  • Experience in next-generation and Sanger sequencing instrumentation, genotyping and gene expression analyses.
  • Expertise in computational biology, bioinformatics and statistical analysis of complex traits. Some familiarity with genotype imputation, principle component analysis, classical linkage, association, loss of heterozygosity and copy number analyses of pedigree and population structures would be advantageous.
  • Expertise in one or more aspects of clinical neurology and/or neuroscience
  • Experience providing hands-on assistance to trainees. Aptitude in project management, supervision and mentorship of laboratory staff would be preferable.
  • Excellent and effective communication skills
  • The ability to work in a pressured, fast-paced and demanding team environment
  • Drive and enthusiasm
  • Creativity, initiative and good judgment.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR/JUDGEMENT

The successful applicant will be directly responsible for errors in their work, for reporting problems and mistakes in a timely way, and for correcting those errors. Aspects of the research will be jointly reviewed by Research Associates and Dr. Farrer.

The BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre and the University of British Columbia (UBC), Department of Medical Genetics, invite applications for a Medical Director position in the Provincial Medical Genetics Program.

The Medical Director is responsible for administering one of the largest and most comprehensive clinical genetics programs in the world, located at the BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre. There are 15 full-time and part-time clinical geneticists and over 20 genetic counselors in the clinical group involving pediatric, obstetrical, internal medicine, biochemical and molecular sub-specialties. The Medical Director reports to the Department Head, the Senior Medical Director, and Vice President of Ambulatory Programs, BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre. The position has protected academic time and will include an appropriate University academic rank.

The Provincial Medical Genetics Program provides comprehensive genetic services to the province of British Columbia and has a long tradition of excellence in clinical care, education and research. The scope of clinical practice includes prenatal genetic assessment and counseling, dysmorphology, pediatric genetic assessment, and adult clinical genetics. The Program includes a fully accredited Royal College Residency Training Program in Medical Genetics, Canadian College of Medical Genetics fellowships in clinical, biochemical, molecular and cytogenetics and a Masters Genetic Counselling program.

The Department seeks a geneticist with demonstrated outstanding clinical skills, who will foster interactions amongst the diverse Department of Medical Genetics, and provide leadership and innovation for the Provincial Medical Genetics Program in the emerging era of Genomic Medicine with demonstrated excellence in teaching.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in independent research and/or medical education scholarship in an interactive environment and should be an enthusiastic mentor. Candidates for this position will have an M.D. or equivalent degree, must be eligible for permanent licensing in the province of British Columbia, as well as having specialist certification in medical genetics with either the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Researchers in the CFRI Genetics & Health research cluster use the powerful tools of human genetics and genomics to improve human health and quality of life through translational medicine. There are extensive collaborations among clinical genetic researchers and scientists at CFRI and throughout the Department of Medical Genetics with expertise in molecular genetics, biochemical genetics, molecular cytogenetics, genomics and other complementary areas, providing outstanding opportunities to train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows as well as clinical fellows, residents and genetic counselling students in research that fosters the application of recent advances in genetics and genomics to improve patient care.
