The James Miller Memorial Award was established in
memory of Jim Miller who was the founding Head of the Department of
Medical Genetics. The Medical Genetics Graduate Program is the
culmination of his work. This award (and $300) will be presented
annually at the Medical Genetics Research Day. It was first awarded in
the 2005/2006 academic year.
(a) Criteria:
This award is to be given to the Medical Genetics PhD student who best exemplifies Jim's values of:
- Integration of basic science with clinical medical genetics;
- Creative leadership in departmental exchange of scientific ideas;
- Originality and creative thinking;
- "A high degree of independence."
The candidate is to be of high academic standing but there will be no attempt to pick the "top" student.
(b) Eligibility:
- PhD and MD/PhD students who have completed at least three years in the Medical Genetics Graduate Program.
- Students must be far enough along in their PhD studies that they
can be considered to be "graduating" (approximately in their final
year) but still in the Program (and therefore one-time winners only).
(c) Nomination Procedures:
- Supervisors of eligible students will be contacted by the Graduate
Secretary in September/October and asked for their nominations; a copy
of this document will be attached to the email.
- Supervisors nominating their student(s) are to email or mail the
Graduate Secretary a letter of support along with their student(s)' CV.
The Graduate Secretary will provide these nominations and supporting
documents to the Award Review Committee by the pre-established deadline.
- Once the Award Review Committee has identified the current winner
of the Award, the student and the student's supervisor(s) will be
notified by the Graduate Advisor. The Graduate Secretary will notify
the Dept. of Medical Genetics Academic Office, the UBC Development
Office - Awards Services; and complete the required form for the
Student Financial Assistance and Awards office.
- The recipient of the James Miller Memorial Award will be asked (and
given several weeks' notice) to present a short talk on his/her
research at the annual Medical Genetics Research Day.
(d) Award Review Committee:
The Award Review Committee is to be composed of Medical Genetics
faculty members: one member from the Medical Genetics Graduate Program
Advisory Committee and two members who have been academically connected
with Jim. This will be a standing committee for at least the first two
to three years (2005, 2006 and possibly 2007) to get the process
started on an appropriate track. |
