Patricia Baird Award

The Patricia A. Baird Prize was endowed by friends and colleagues to honour Dr. Patricia A. Baird who served as Head of the Department of Medical Genetics from 1978 to 1989.

The award is given annually to a MD undergraduate medical student who has demonstrated an appreciation for and interest in Medical Genetics. Any UBC MD undergraduate medical student involved in clinical care with a patient in which genetics plays an etiological role, or research relevant to Medical Genetics can be considered for the award. To be considered for the award, the student must give a presentation on their work to the Medical Genetics Clinic at one of the Clinic’s Friday rounds, this will be evaluated by the Baird Prize Award Committee. In particular, students are encouraged to present cases they have seen during clinical rotations in our Department or other departments, or pursue summer research projects. Individuals interested in this award are encouraged to participate in the Medical Genetics Summer Journal Club and Case Review. The award recipient will be determined in August of each year.

Patricia Baird graduated in Medicine, trained in Pediatrics and joined the Department in 1968. Her research work has been in two phases. The first focused on genetic epidemiology, and this work helped elucidate the distribution, natural history, and prognosis for several birth defects and genetic diseases. The second phase of her work has been at the interface of the application of genetic and reproductive technology with its societal, ethical, and policy implications.

She has served on many policy advisory bodies, among them the National Advisory Board on Science and Technology chaired by the Prime Minister; the Medical Research Council of Canada (and its Standing Committee on Ethics in Experimentation); and many other national and international policy and science committees.

She headed the Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies, which led to legislation in this field in Canada. She has been associated with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research since the mid ‘80s, being a Vice President and serving on its Board and Research Council. She was one of the three-member independent Inquiry Panel into the Olivieri case at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. She has served as an advisor to WHO, and as Chair of the Premier’s Council on Aging and Seniors’ Issues in British Columbia in recent years.

She has received honorary degrees from four Canadian universities, the Order of British Columbia, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada. She was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for service to the community. She is a specially elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and is a University Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of British Columbia.
