INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS TO THE MEDICAL GENETICS GRADUATE PROGRAM

RESEARCH SUPERVISORS

Prospective students are not required to have secured the commitment of a Research Supervisor before, or at the time, they apply to the Medical Genetics Graduate Program.  However, following acceptance to the Program by the Medical Genetics Admissions Committee, successful applicants must complete arrangements for a supervisor before receiving final acceptance to graduate studies at UBC.

Students are to submit their on-line application forms and all supporting documents by their applicable deadline. 


A.  Admission Requirements

  • Relevant four-year Bachelor's degree; and/or Master's degree.
  • First class standing in upper level genetics, biochemistry and statistics (biometrics).
  • Research experience
  • Excellent references
  • GPA requirement for students with:
    - Canadian or USA credentials
    - International credentials

B.  Application Documents

  • Application Form: Submit on-line application form (http://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/application-admission/apply-online).
  • Reference Form:  Once the application form is submitted on-line, the applicant's referees listed who have professional email addresses will automatically receive a secure link to the on-line UBC reference form. Otherwise, referees must mail a paper reference form and / or letter in a sealed and endorsed envelope to the Medical Genetics Graduate Program Office.
  • Transcripts: Submit two official copies (in sealed and endorsed envelopes) for each post-secondary school attended to the Medical Genetics Graduate Program Office.  International students: submit two official copies of all original language transcripts and original language degree certificates (if applicable);and two copies of certified English translations of all post-secondary transcripts and degree certificates. 

C.  Application FAQ

Referees: should be university faculty; and, when applicable, supervisors from co-op work experience programs and / or relevant industry employment.

Referees should comment on the applicant's academic and intellectual abilities, and when known, their research skills and aptitude.  They should give specific examples of the applicant's research accomplishments; and an assessment of the student's ability to succeed academically. References from post-doctoral fellows, non-science work employers and personal physicians are not acceptable.

Additional Documentation:  Applicants who graduated two or more years ago should email a current CV and a Statement of Intent to the Graduate Program Assistant.

D.  Summary of the Application Process

Step 1:
Once an application is complete, it is reviewed by the Medical Genetics Graduate Program Admissions Committee. The applicant will be advised of the decision of the Admissions Committee by email. Applicants who are deemed academically admissible to the Program proceed to step 2.

Step 2: The academically admissible applicant must secure the commitment of a research supervisor in the Department of Medical Genetics who agrees to provide supervision and financial support.  Once a supervisor is secured, the applicant advises the Medical Genetics Graduate Assistant.

Step 3: Finally, the academically admissible applicant will be recommended for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by the Medical Genetics Graduate Program. Following the Faculty's review, the successful applicant will be issued an official acceptance letter to Graduate Studies at the University of British Columbia. It is this acceptance letter that international students must present when applying for a study permit.
